Two cents: I love strips written by Peter David, but his novels (ok, I've read only one - Spiderman) didn't strike me as being particularly good. Same thing with Neil Gaiman. I think comic writers in general have trouble pacing out a longer, word-driven (as opposed to picture-driven) story.
