Michael's dream

Last summer, I think it was, I started playing with characters for a novel I still have yet to write. To make my characters more real to me, I like to write scenes from their lives that won't necessarily be in the actual story. I'll write about them getting dressed in the morning, or thinking about breakfast cereal, hurrying to school or work, memories from their childhood, talking about those memories to other characters, and the dreams they have. This is a dream that Michael, and uncaring sort of guy who is in love with his car, had. It fell from my mind to the page and has not really been edited since. Thoughts are always very much appreciated.

Hello all! Like you, I'm an avid reader and writer. I mainly write in the fantasy/adventure genre, and am working on an online serial at the moment called Above Ground (freely available). What I like about writing webserials is it's the ultimate in getting feedback immediately for what is, in the end, a first draft.

Anyway. I wanted to ask you all a question: what are your techniques for overcoming writer's block?
