I agree with Jenna. The one and only time I modeled a character after a real person I just took an aspect of personality from that person. Say you know someone who is narcissistic, it is a dominant characteristic of this person, you could use that characteristic to help you develop the narcissistic character. Imagining what the real person would do and how they would act can help you 'get into character' when you write scenes with your narcissistic character. You'd sort of be looking through narcissistic coloured glass when you were working with this character and everything they did, thought and said would be influenced by it.
