writers_loft | Strengths and Weaknesses

One of my strengths is character. I played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons for years and I had to step into the character's shoes and think like he or she would and that helped a lot. As I get older I learn more about human behavior and the world and that helps too.

My greatest weakness is no-butt-in-chair itis ( you will notice that my butt isn't in the chair right now). After that it would be plot, I think. I don't think I do well with plot. My plots aren't big or deep enough.

I'd have to say my strengths are character-driven plots with lots of dialogue and the ability to finish a story. My weakness is keeping things short or trying to do too much with a plot.

My strength is building characters with a lot of history and giving them depth. However I have a hard time with conversations. I tend to get wrapped up in what is going on around them and forgetting to make them talk.

Greatest Strength? Experience and Inspiration. I have both in spades. Three divorces, a child, four and a half years living overseas, PLUS a year spent deployed to a third-world craphole, and having visited almost 1 of every 10 countries in the world so far, I think I've seen quite a bit. I've got more sky miles than some commuter airline pilots. And I've stood on five of the seven continents so far. Things to draw on for inspiration, or just for whatever. I've got 'em.

Weakness? Confidence. The will and the confidence to go on and just start. Someone else mentioned in another post about the first paragraph being the hardest to write, and everything else starts to flow after that. If I could bring myself to START, I'd be doing fine. THAT, however, is my problem...

My strengths...hm. I'm very judgemental of my writing, so this is hard, but I suppose my strengths include building living characters and writing realistic dialogue.

Endings, though. *sigh* I can never write a decent ending to a novel. I really can't, it's horrible. I'll get there, someday...

My greatest weakness? Creating characters that have a distinct 'feel' to them and are original and have believable flaws in them.

Strength: Poetry is easy for me. Writing an article each week for my job is easy for me. However...

Weakness: Writing fiction and doubting what I write is extremely difficult right now. I'm wondering how I can build more trust between me and the page.

My greatest strength? That's easy, characterization and dialog.

The greatest weakness? That's easy too. I tend to forget scenery. I swear, I believe I could write a whole book without including one bit of scenery. Luckily, my husband and I write as a team, and he's great at scenery.

We began when he was on an unaccompanied tour of the Philippines, and he wrote a short scene. I read it (unpacking for him when he returned) and when he came in that evening I told him, "Your characters wouldn't act like that. You're writing John Wayne in skirts!" He told me to fix it and that began one of the most pleasant partnerships I have ever been involved with. It also served quite nicely to allow us a vehicle on which to rebuild our life together. Let me tell you, that's hard.

I think my strengths are character and the technical aspects of writing. I think I'm pretty good at creating chemistry between my main characters. Maybe my creativity in generating ideas is a strength as well.

My biggest weakness is getting a whole plot pieced together without holes. I second guess myself a lot. I'm not sure I'm very good at planting clues that aren't too obvious yet are obvious enough to make the ending believable. I worry that my mystery elements are too predictable. I also have trouble making my beginning fit my middle and end.

I write a lot of fan fiction which has helped in my writing skills, but it takes too much of my time from my other writing. I have opinions out the you know what, so I love to write opinion pieces. On the other hand, my collection of short stories is suffering from lack of time working on them. Also my Suspense story has been pushed to the back.

My procrastination is costing me, literally.

I need encouragement in that area.
