Designing species

Any advice on creating your own race of people/creatures? I want to supplement the standard human, elves, and dwarves with some races of my own, and need a starting point.

You've got to think of how we define the people who are already here and catagorized. Country of origin, skin color, genders, and so forth. There's probably going to be some similarities or at least classifications as what's already here, so that the reader can idintify them as such, right? So just kind of start with one race, and alter it slightly. Dark skinned, light skinned...leads to different colors or textures maybe. Male, female....leads to a third gender maybe.

Does that make sense? It's a lazy Sunday and I'm fighting a head cold so I hope it does heh.

You could use Kobold races, those are pretty easy to invent and I think they always work.
