This is a really good post. I genereally tend to stay away from things that look like they were written by someone undergoing puberty. I don't mean to be ageist, but I can only read so much of "reflective broken mirror bleeding heart, darkness, descending, vortex snowflake" symbolism before I feel like retching. Anguish is overdone, and I can't even make myself read it, I just can't.

I think it's the most cathartic thing to write (and I write loads of it, in secret), but it's the hardest thing to get right, without making readers roll their eyes and think "here we go again."

Confidence is also a big thing. If someone's like "I'm not sure if this is good, I don't know if I want to be a writer, I just kind of threw this together..." It makes me think "why the hell should I bother? They aren't serious, and I wont waste my time."
