A little snippet from the first section of prose in the Tal'verse. I have no idea if this is staying the way it is. It's a little rambling on purpose, to highlight how young he is, but also I feel like I'm not really getting where I need to with it. It seems to make sense to me, but I know the whole plot so I don't think that really counts. So it would be really helpful if you tell me what you got out of it so I can make sure it's working...

So, I have this screen play I've been writing for script frenzy (google it), but I don't know what should happen next. I'm not even really sure what's going on currently, but there you have it.

Share ideas pls? )

As always, you don't have to answer the questions, they are simply a tool to inspire, trigger ideas or just make you think about your characterizations and the world around your story.

World Building 3

Factions and Power Struggles

1. What style of government does your key country have? (monarchy, matriarchy, democracy, anarchy...)
2. Is the government stable?
3. Does religion have a major presence in this country?
4. What style of religion is it?
5. Are there guilds that have great presence in this country?
6. Are the nobles, merchants and wealthy sorts content with the current government?
7. Are there any other factions in competition or in power struggles with the government?
8. If there are factions, how many factions are there? Who is allied with whom?
9. Do the power struggles reach beyond the country's borders?
10. Do the power struggles weaken the government? Enough to tempt other nations to invade?
11. What would happen if the other factions took power? What would the country be like afterward?
12. What would happen if another nation invaded? What would the country be like afterward?

These things may help trigger plot ideas so if you want to discuss, ask questions, expand on or delve deeper, please do so.

Here's an article, written by a group of editors from a publishing house, on the importance of taking time with your world building, establishing the rules and then sticking to them consistently (applies to all genres).

World Building 2: When Reality Trumps "Um, it works 'cause...it's magic!" or Why Those Social Science, History and Science Classes Are Useful.

Things to think about like do your climates and geography make sense? Are your population centers viable?

1. Are your villages, towns, cities located in realistic places? Like near a water source, a crossroads, a port, a day's walk from the next village or town?

2. Yes, farmers have to exist even in a fantasy world and food has to come from somewhere. Is there enough farmland and/or other food resources to feed your population?

3. If wood is a resource in your world, are there enough woodlands to sustain a population using it for heating, building and etc? If wood isn't a resource on your world, what alternatives do you have?

4. Are the physical features on your map sensible? Is there a water source like permanently snow capped mountains to feed rivers and lakes or springs for creeks? Do your rivers flow downhill?

5. Does your climate actually support your terrain? Is there enough rainfall to support life or a forest? No rain forests where the weather is hot and sunny all the time?

6. Does your flora and fauna work in the climate? Are your fruits and veggies climate appropriate? Not trying to grow oranges up in the rain forest or Rhodies down in the desert? No polar bears down in the desert?

Have any more points you'd like to add to the list? Anything you want to discuss?

These 'Building' posts are mainly food for thought and to help trigger the creative brain in figuring out characters and world building. You can answer the questions in the comments here or in your own personal journal or not at all, this isn't mandatory. I hope people choose to post their answers here because it is fun and interesting to see how other people see their characters and worlds. If you do choose to post your responses in your own journal please put a link back to this community with it. The more members and participation we have the more fun this will be.

This will probably be of more use to those working in non modern Earth settings.
