Soon after I posted the last update, I tossed into my backpack a few items of clothing, my wifi phone (to use as an offline ereader), and my flip phone. No laptop; I knew I wouldn't have wifi access where I was going, nor much time. Then I rushed off to spend a few days with my sick relative.

I'm still here. The acute medical crisis morphed into a need for long-term care.

I've acquired Internet access again, as you can see. I hope to get my laptop back, later this month; when I do, I'll be able to resume posting online fiction. Ebooks will take a little longer, because my relative is still being flooded with medical care, which I'm coordinating.

The good news is that – for the first time in thirty years – I've established a daily writing schedule. I had vastly underestimated the benefits of paper and pen. So I'm continuing to produce stories, at a more rapid pace than in the recent past; it's just that the publication pipeline is clogged at the moment. Thank you all for your patience.

Ah, discoveries.

There is the leader of the group. There is also at least one rival angling to take over.

Amazing what clarifying the earlier events does.

I think I will have to put in more sightings of the fugitive wizards, just to remind the character that they are the important ones.

This week's prompt is:
stimulating

Anyone can join, with a 50-word creative fiction vignette in the comments. Your vignette does not have to include the prompt term. Any (G or PG) definition of the word can be used.

The Invisible Chains – Part 2: Bonds of Fear

cover of "Bonds of Fear" by Andrew Ashling
Is the strain becoming too much? The threat of a barbarian invasion is imminent now, and the resources to organize the defense meager, to say the least. Moreover, the high king, father of the princes, begins to worry that one of his intrepid sons might do irreparable damage to the kingdom by provoking a force, greater than they can handle. Then there is the tortured relationship between Anaxantis and Ehandar…

Luckily for him, Queen Emelasuntha, his mother, has Anaxantis’s back. But will it be enough, now that his father has send his elite force after his rebellious son?

A lot of new characters, each with their own story, appear on the stage. Young pages, some cute, some haughty and arrogant, a mysterious, barbarian prince and a ruthless baron are just a few of them.

Between all the turmoil of a country in upheaval and the frantic preparations for war, there is still room for love, tenderness, and laughter.

rings and other things

Characters are flying to the place.

I realize that when defining their powers I have to factor that in.

Then, I remember we have someone who could make the entire matter moot by giving them rings of flight.

I'm going to have to juggle that carefully, so that the heroine doesn't get one. So it's easy but not too easy for him to make enough.

The School Reader, Fifth Book: Designed As A Sequel To Sanders' Fourth Reader by Charles Walton Sanders

An 1859 book presenting texts for elocution classes. Probably mostly of interest for the selections, chosen for the edification of the young as well as the elocution -- and to keep them interested. Often has several selections on the same topic. For instance, at one point, the condor. Eulogies on Thomas Jefferson and John Adams -- both, considering their common death date -- and on John Quincy Adams. Among many other topics.

I've got to nail down how many villains are up to shenanigans. And establish what they are doing.

Then, and only then, can I work out how the heroine learns about them before the end.

Even though the story's working its way from her viewpoint.
