These 'Building' posts are mainly food for thought and to help trigger the creative brain in figuring out characters and world building. You can answer the questions in the comments here or in your own personal journal or not at all, this isn't mandatory. I hope people choose to post their answers here because it is fun and interesting to see how other people see their characters and worlds. If you do choose to post your responses in your own journal please put a link back to this community with it. The more members and participation we have the more fun this will be.


This will probably be of more use to those working in non modern Earth settings.

Society

For your primary culture, city, or country.

1. What are the social views on slavery?
2. What are the social views on magic or science?
3. What are the social views on sexual behavior, relationships, marriage, same sex partners?
4. What are the social views on the treatment of children? On having or preventing conception?
5. Are there defined gender roles or a gender status?
6. Is there a class system? Or caste system?
7. How are the non dominant race, species or minorities viewed and treated?


Interview with your main character, key character and or villain.
(Keep in mind that the character may not have the same views as society or even the other characters and that's ok, everybody sees things differently).

In your character's voice answer the following questions:

1. How do feel about slavery?

Society
For your primary culture, city, or country.
1. What are the social views on slavery?
* No slavery ;)
2. What are the social views on magic or science?
* Harry Potter is a damned book to some and the parliament had lately a discussion if Darvin's theory was right, because according to them was not.

3. What are the social views on sexual behavior, relationships, marriage, same sex partners?
* In many families sex is a forbidden subject, everybody should get married, sex after marriage, same sex partners ok but as long as they don't show up too much with it and children don't see.
Of course for the young generation from the big cities it's different, but also when I look for example at my roomie... hmm great student and such, but so backwarded mentally, horrible (well her choices, I'm not like that though and neither is my character).

4. What are the social views on the treatment of children? On having or preventing conception?
* Children should be raised up well, but not always are, parents usually don't know how to talk to children who are so different generation... not only because of the normal generation exchange, but also because of the change of political system after 1989. Contraception is accepted, though you have to be aware of the fact that many couples use natural methods, because they think it's more Catholic.

5. Are there defined gender roles or a gender status?
* The standard is that the man is the head of the family, but the practical situation is that whoever can find the job, works (and who can't, goes to England :p). Women are treated very well here, our women are much more feminine comparing to the western European ones IMO, they don't mind cooking, washing, cleaning... in the new kind of couples the duties are spreaded equally, while in the traditional ones the woman takes them, but doesn't complain at it even if she doesn't like it.

6. Is there a class system? Or caste system?
* No.

7. How are the non dominant race, species or minorities viewed and treated?
* Minorities are treated well here, Poland has been for centuries a multinational country famous of tolerance, and even though these days because of the political issues not really dependent on us minorities are very small in amount, they can't complain. We also have students from different countries and despite pracically every of them heard something racist (well, football scum tribe is everywhere) they usually talk about PL in superlatives.

And now the interview with my spiced-up persona, miss Nathii M.:
1. How do feel about slavery?
* Horrible. Still exists and we should fight it.

2. How do you feel about magic? Science?
* Skeptical about magic, though I'm a Scorpio and believe in some astrology facts. I follow science news in daily general information newspapers. I need to be up to date not only because I'm interested, but also it helps me to seduce the Ph.D. graduates.

3. What are your views about sexual behavior, relationships, marriage, same sex partners?
* Very opened about sex and everything related to it. Mom doesn't know who is my father and has never hidden it from me, I had my first time when I was 15 (just after turning legal). I feel also bisexual, but only had kisses with another girl. Yeah, wanna get married but heck not now.

4. How do you feel about children?
* I am a child myself yet, at least I feel so. It's a horror for a 14-yeared to have a baby, IMO. I'm 20 and still it scares me.

4a. Plan on having any children, being careful, don't care if you make any or not?
* Very careful for now, but maybe in 10 years I'd like to have a lovely three, or I can adopt them as well.

5. How do you feel about your society's gender roles and or status?
* Keep being raised just by mom and she bounces from ultrafeministic comments to the ones that a woman should listen to the man because he loves her then. I personally love being spoiled and treated like a little princess, also don't mind cooking for my future man (though I hate it) and as much as I consider myself as a strong character chick, I want my man to dominate, really, sissy-girls make me puke.

6. How do you feel about your class or status in your society?
* Mom is one of the best lawyers in a city of 650K inhabitants, I'm also a law student (or rather theoretically I am) so we're considered the upper-medium class in terms of cash and surely we belong to the intelligence. I surely prefer talking to adults, especially adults who have something interesting to say, but I can hold a conversation also with the neds or people like that.

7. Are you one of the dominant races or species?
* I don't think that any race should be dominant, this is bullshit. People are equal in being humans.

7a. How do you feel about the other races and species?
* Oh well.

7b. How do you treat the other races and species?
* Not better, not worse than my own.

7c. How are you treated by the other races and species?
* I think they like me :) Who wouldn't like me though? :)
