I'm asked to write a synopsis of The Storyteller's tale and send the first three chapters of the story to an agent.

I was always told that a synopsis should not be no more than half of a page and yet I see synopsis that are over two pages.

The agent didn't state how many pages they want for the sysnopsis, so should I just go with two pages and double space it or go for a page and one line space?

Or should I just wing the whole thing and give the agent one page sysnopsis and hope for the best or go full out and do two pages long or longer?

Thank you,
Beth Brownell

I took a class in book proposals at a writer's conference last year, and the packet they gave us used Gone with the Wind as the example, and that synopsis is 9 pages long.

I'm going again in two weeks, and I just pulled out the paperwork, and it was a whole packet for the proposal that also included a cover letter, background, table of contents (for the finished book) and three sample chapters. All told this was 15 pages without the sample chapters.

Definitely see what others tell you.

In my writing classes, I am told that anything should be brief and to the point with an agent or publisher. I did this for an assignment, and I'll tell you that it was nearly as hard as writing the piece itself. And that was after doing lots of revisions. Revisions never end. Part of the reason is because you do not want to present yourself as too flattery to a prospective reader. They read many of these a day and they want to read something that catches their interest. It's hard, but try sticking to one page and I am pretty sure that it is single-spaced. Make it interesting. I hope this helps, Beth.
