Chapter 3: The New Kid
I ran, head on through the trees that started from the back of out garden. My heart beat like a drum, trying to force its way from my chest. I weaved and bobbed through the trees, ducking under branches to avoid being knocked to the ground as was likely to happen with my luck. A blur of dark greens and browns flew past my vision with not enough time to focus on any shapes. All I could see was a mesmerizing glow on the horizon.
Excitement pushed me forwards through the exhaustion lining my body. The crisp wind whipped past my face keeping me alert, the leaves crunched under my feet as they repeatedly hit the ground and the smell of the pine trees filled the air. After a few minutes of running I slowed to a trot, my lungs and throat burning for more oxygen, my head spinning and dots obstructing my vision.
As I slowly moved towards the glow it suddenly broke level and lit up the area around me, blinding me for a second until my eyes adjusted. A brilliant yellow light caused the glow, too bright to discern any shape. Birds in the trees made sounds of annoyance from the disruption and nocturnal creatures scattered away from the brightness of it.
I trudged on for a little while longer until the glowing started to subside and dim, pulsating for a few minutes before suddenly stopping, leaving me in complete darkness, in the middle of the woods, alone, and a long way from my house. I laughed at the thought that this was just like the so many horror movies I’d seen, only I wasn’t stupid like most of the characters in those movies, I mean running upstairs is a rookie mistake, come on.
My smile faltered when I heard a rustling sound nearby, and realised I’d made the rookie mistake of going into the woods alone. I started having flashes of some escaped, psychopathic murderer in the woods waiting to pounce and attack me any moment. Another rustling sound farther away...nothing... another one behind me.
I spun around expecting a crazy guy with a knife but instead encountered a big nothing. Not a normal nothing, but a shadow in the distance that was more like a distinct lack of light, but whenever I tried to look at it directly, all I could see was everything behind, but with a quick movement of my eyes I could see a flash of the shadow for just a moment before my eyes focused again.
I made a move towards the shape and it disappeared from view completely. A cold wind blew through the trees making the branches sway, and I realised that I was really cold with no coat to keep me warm. I decided I would walk a little farther and if I found nothing I would head back the way I came and hope I didn’t get lost. The forests around my small village were quite large and could get someone who wasn’t used to them lost very easily, and in the dark even I could get lost (with my terrible directional skills).
After walking a little farther toward where the light source must have been, I finally broke through the trees into a clearing, surrounded by trees apart from far in front of me was what appeared to be a large boulder, and what I saw I was not prepared for. The thing that was most notable was the five large craters in the ground. After closer inspection I noticed that they were almost all very warm to the touch and smelled of burning coals, but nothing was inside them, as if the ground had just fallen in on itself. Part of the all the holes walls were warn, like somebody had slid in, or climbed out. Surely someone hadn’t got here before me?
I walked towards one that seemed isolated from the others. This hole was at a different angle, the smell had dissipated but the hole was still warm to the touch. From here I could hear two new sounds. The sound of fast moving water somewhere near the clearing, and lots of tiny rustling in the hole I was inspecting...this hole was not empty.
I slowly focused my eyes on the bottom of this deep hole and let my eyes adjust to the darkness, my heart rate thundering extremely fast again. Small, moving shapes started to come into focus and my stomach dropped as a paralyzing fear came over my body. In the bottom of the whole were hundreds of big bugs, consisting of beetles, worms and ... spiders.
I let out a loud shriek as I stumble backwards towards the boulder. My shoulder hit the rock hard and stopped my screaming as I focused on the sudden pain. I quickly swept my hands all over me, imagining myself covered in deadly spiders, crawling through my hair, but found nothing. I took a few deep breaths, calmed myself and took a few more steps away from the hole, holding onto the rock with my shaking hands.
As my hands searched the rock they came across a gap. I finally tore my gaze from the hole and looked to see what it was, seeing a large hole in the rock. I realised now what this clearing was. It was the old mining caves site. It had been long abandoned after one of the roofs had caved in and nearly crushed several of the workers, after which they had deemed it too dangerous to continue working in and shut it down. This was before I was born, over 50 years ago in fact, but it was part of our village’s small history, about the only interesting thing that’s ever happened here.
So here I was, staring into this cave, and normally I would stay away from things like that, probably full of spiders inside (my fear pretty much rules everything I do), but there was something about this cave that was alluring, like there was someone inside with a rope around me, pulling me towards them. Not just that though, like something further in was singing, not singing aloud in my ears, but inside my soul, asking me to come forward.
I thought I could see something deep in the darkness, a light. I started to walk slowly into the cave, towards the light, I could tell now that it had a bluish hue, like it was reflected off of water. I heard a noise and a shadow went past the light, causing me to snap out of my trance like state. What was I doing? This was stupid, going into a cave on my own, at night. I backed away and decided it was definitely time to go back, before whomever or whatever had caused the shadow knew I was here, and decided they didn’t like it.
So I made my way home, very fast, only veering off course a few timed before realising I was heading in the wrong direction and correcting course, making it home and quickly getting into bed, exhaustion from the walking and running and generally the whole experience, all tugging at my body, making me fall asleep almost instantly. Problem was I forgot to set my alarm beforehand.

Lines of sunlight hit my closed eyes, forcing me to lose grip of any dreams I may have been having and become conscious of the room instead. I began organising thoughts in my head. First, it was cold outside the comfort of my covers. Second, I was still wearing what I was wearing yesterday from when I went trekking, probably filling my bed with leaves and mud. That’s when the events of last night hit me and I began wondering if it was just a dream. I also felt like I was forgetting something. That’s when I could finally hear the shouting.
The distinct voice of my dad drifted up the stairs but mainly boomed through the floor boards of my room, as he shouted ‘Lewis! GET UP! You’re gonna be late for school!’
I pushed away thought of what had happened the day before, between the Josh business and the cave, it was definitely too much to deal with now when I was already running late, so I quickly showered, dressed and left with a ‘bye’ to dad, to which he grunted in response. And with that I walked slowly, hoping to be able to go straight inside without hanging around for the bell and bumping into ‘Kyle and the Gang’ (Cool and the Gang? Get it? Ok, I’m not a comedian, so sue me.)
***
I should have known that I would have no luck avoiding embarrassment and trouble today. I was like a magnet for it. I arrived the school grounds just after Kyle and his friends came around the corner, and I had no hope of not being noticed, I had stupidly worn a bright orange t-shirt that made me look like a traffic cone, and apparently Kyle decided to be a drunk driver, slamming into me the first chance he got, pushing me and my backpack into the ground. Most of the contents of my bag spilled around me and I even managed to get a pencil sticking into my...well, let’s just say a ‘delicate’ area.
I looked up at Kyle, anger burning in my eyes like an intense fire, getting hotter as people started to notice and laugh. I hated him, and everything he stood for. I was fed up of the way he treated people, not just me but any outsider. I hated him more than I feared those spiders...ok maybe not, but still, I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face, not with violence, but with some sort of quick witted comment that would make him look the fool instead of me. The comment sat on my tongue and lips, just waiting to jump out.
I glanced at all his friends surrounding him, all rugby players, and all twice my size. The flame in my eyes dulled to the flicker of a candle as I realised how out of my depth I was. So instead of saying anything, I kept absolutely quiet as I picked up my things, including an astrology book I needed to return to the library, and walked away into the main school building, head held high.
This isn’t where my bad luck ends though. I took two steps through the school door and bumped into Josh, he had obviously seen what had just happened. I still hadn’t forgiven him for yesterday, and the fact that he just stood there now without saying anything, reminded me who he was now, just as bad as the bullies for being friends with them and not doing anything about it. He was just as guilty.
He stared at me for a while, for a moment he looked like he was going to apologise, either for yesterday or what had just happened, but I didn’t want to hear it yet. I wanted to be mad at him a bit longer, maybe just so I could stop deluding myself something was going to happen with him. So I ignored him, turned away and went to the first class of the day, History. See, told you I had bad luck, who wants to learn history at 9:00 in the morning, especially when we’ve been learning about The Tudors for the past 6 weeks and for the third time since I was 5?

At first break, I found Eliska lurking outside Mrs. Perkins classroom, or as I call her, ‘Cat Lady’, not because she has the look of a woman who owns lots of cats (though I wouldn’t be surprised) but because she reminds me of one, very sleek, always turning up out of nowhere, eyes in the back of her head, and I’m sure I caught her eyeing the mouse in the biology classroom once.
I took one look at Eliska and knew she was in investigator mode. Her dark hair with orange and purple streaks had been tied back, and she had her creases of concentration on her olive-toned face as she held her ear to a glass on the door. She was also wearing her ‘spy’ clothes, back three-quarter length jeans and an black t-shirt and jacket that had her favourite band badges sewn all over them.
I quietly ducked down under the window of the door and tapped on her shoulder to get her attention. I should have known that was a mistake. She jumped around in shock and wacked me on the side of the head as she turned. This day was not going well for me.
OK, so after a very long time, here is the first part of chapter three, unedited and everything so probably all sorts of mistakes. It's is probs gonna be a while before the next part because this is all i've written so far, but i do know where it's going kind of in this chapter so it shouldn't be too bad (not like the months it was before i finally got this up) Enjoy and as usual, feedback is encouraged, seriously, please! haha.
