I often use different world settings in my stories and I was wondering what other techniques people use to explain the world setting to the reader.

What do you think are the most important things that need to be explained? Do you stop and explain as you go along? Or do you have a character that the others have to explain things to? How much do you think needs to be explained? What do you think are the best ways to get this information to your reader?

Chapter 1

It was a bright Monday morning and Hunter was running late for his bus, as usual so he quickly grabbed a handful of toast and ran out the door with his bag over his shoulder, soon reaching the stop in time to catch the bus before it left without him. He paid for his ticket and sat down at the back of the bus, greeting his friends as he did. There was John and Becky sat at one side of the bus, cuddling together and laughing about some joke that had been said between them, and then there was Aimee sat on her own on the other side of the bus looking out of the window. She glanced around and smiled as Hunter sat down next to her “Hey there, and how are you this morning?” she asked as Hunter took his bag off, “I’m ok thank you, how are you on this fine morning?” replied Hunter, looking out at the bright blue, cloudless sky overhead. “Oh I’m ok thanks” smiled Aimee watching Hunter silently as he got comfy in his seat next to her.

They say the sky's the limit. But they don't tell you your feet are stuck in the ground. They don't tell you you leave footprints because that's where you've gone and where you're going to be. They don't tell you about gravity and all the hundreds of things weighing you down. They don't tell you about family and how you drag them in chains with you when you leave, pulling you down and pulling you backwards into the blackhole of your origin.

They say money doesn't grow on trees. But they don't tell you it doesn't grow anywhere else. A select number of groups have it and have the illusion of forests of cash and credit cards, checks and infinite withdrawal amounts but they don't tell you how to get it. Their televisions show you reality channels and the MTV Cribs but they show you that comes from birth and sports. Not being genuine or hardworking or sincere.

Birth and luck. That's what they don't tell you. That's how you cut the sky in two and that's how you find money in your appletree. Welcome to the real world where there is no road map and there are no guarantees for all your hard work and sacrifice. But even if it doesn't always seem promising, a broken road is always better than a dead end or a ditch.
